Lauren
Rogers Museum of Art. Nestled among the Oaks
that line 5th Avenue in downtown Laurel, a short 20 minutes from
Hattiesburg, is the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. You might simply
drive by if you weren’t looking, as the building seemingly blends
into the landscape. However, one can’t help but be
drawn by what it
holds inside. Opened in 1923 as a memorial to Lauren Eastman Rogers,
the only son of one of the town's founding families, the museum’s
collection is both small – and large. In one display, a magnifying
glass is suspended over one of the world’s smallest baskets, while
around the corner are European greats including Corot, Millet and
Eugène Boudin.
American artists are more than represented with pieces from
Thomas Moran, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent,
George Inness, Albert Bierstadt and Robert Henri.
Reflect on the
fine collection of English Georgian Silver or the extensive
collection of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Lauren Rogers is
truly one of Mississippi’s finest museums.
