Longleaf
Trace. Hidden away from the bustle of the
city is a path that takes you back in time, back to when railroads
ruled the countryside, hauling Hattiesburg’s rich timber products to
the Coast and points north.
For more
than 40 miles, from Hattiesburg to Prentiss, the reclaimed grade of
the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad carries walkers, joggers, bikers
and assorted riders along the same path that helped build the City
of Hattiesburg.
The rails have been replaced by an asphalt corridor,
where the chirps of birds and the rustle of trees provide a peaceful
soundtrack to your journey.
This Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Project begins at the
Gateway on 4th Street under the University of Southern Mississippi’s
watertower. Here you can rent a bike or meet up with your favorite
traveling companion for a journey as smooth as a southern summer
breeze.
