BEVERLY DRIVE-IN

Hattiesburg The Beverly Drive-In is one of only 417 remaining drive-in theaters that are still in operation in the United States (www.drive-ins.com). The Beverly opened on Memorial Day weekend in 1948 with one screen, as the second drive-in to open in Mississippi. The first film shown at the Beverly was “Swell Guy,” and guests paid only 39 cents. Wholesome family fun was always available at the Beverly, so much so, that the owners of the drive-in even built their home under the screen.

The second screen was added in 1979, after which Hurricane Frederic heavily damaged both screens. Following repairs, the Beverly opened again a few months later. Shortly after, the owner of the theater died and management was passed on to his wife. The Beverly closed and was not opened again until 1986, then after less than a year, was closed in 1987.

After operating for charity several times a year, the Beverly opened again on May 18, 2001. The drive-in remains open today and shows new releases and double features. Today’s technology has been introduced to the nostalgic atmosphere, and FM radio broadcasts crystal clear sound.
